Deals

Everyone likes good deals right? You know where you have a better deal than someone else. I'm sure we're all trying to get the best deals on everything like subletting our place or being the sublettor. Deals also are like those free ice creams at Baskin Robins, or the coupon for 2 for 1 at NY Fries. We all know of the Mc Deals and the 2 can eat great for 7.48. I personally like deals. I remember when Dell had 100 bucks off their mp3 player I was so tempted to buy it. Afterall it was an amazing deal. 20 gigs of mp3 with 10 hour battery life and it was really small. Then I realized I don't even listen to mp3's.

What makes deals so tempting, that you find yourself wanting things you never wanted beforehand? What is considered a good deal anyways? Can you judge a good deal if there aren't any other deals to compare with? No, in fact deals are sort of an illusion aren't they. Can anyone define what a good deal is without mentioning it in comparison to other people's deals? I guess we fundamentally just like getting special treatment don't we.

Perks

Sure, having a job that pays well with good working conditions and a vital, interesting role is great. However, what really makes your friends drool? Why perks of course! I recall hearing about how deloitte and touche paid for a trip for one of the coops to go to Disney World. Of course it was under a "conference" but come on! Florida! A lot of accounting firms take out their coops to bars and let you drink as much as you want on the company bill.

Hmmm I recall working at HP, the perks you'd get would be discounts on merchandise as is typical at most places. I also got a free lunch where we got to do a coop across the continent with the CEO. And a day off for a trip to Playdium with a bbq included with that. Plus 2 buffet lunches and some coffee for meetings. Ooh and their private gym was very nice too.

Where I'm working now, I suppose I got box seats for a raptors and leaf game, and as many old computers as I want. Unlimitted overtime ain't bad either.

So what kind of crazy perks do you get? I'm not saying perks are important though, more like frosting on the cake, but if the cake sucks then the frosting doesn't mean anything. What do you think about perks? Are they fair? (Perks are extra good bonuses that are not asked for or expected.)

Believe it or not perks can include things as simple of knowing you changed someone's life for the better? But who considers that? What kind of perks have you gotten from things you done?

Google speaks

We all know that google is the best search engine out there right now. Google is like the map of the internet. What's out there, what do people think about and want. So out of boredom I sometimes randomly key in things and see what pops up. People I know with unique names and what not. Nehow, if you ever did something call google wars it's where you key in words and see what how many matches it finds.

For instance:

Round 1:

Good vs Evil

Evil: 19.7 million hits
Good: 189 million hits

Good wins: If anything this shows that we use good too casually as it usually not seen as the opposite of evil by any stretch now a days. ie. Good episode.

Round 2:

Love vs Hate

Hate: 13.5 million
Love: 124 million

Love wins: Or does it? How does our world use the word love today? Worldly love? Agape love: 452 000 where as erotic love: 30 300 000. That's right 30 million more hits for worldly love than agape love. That's more than 500x more.

Round 3:

Life vs death

Life: 181 million
Death: 49 million

Life wins: As it should be, as everyone wants to live right?

Round 4:

God vs Devil (Anyone notice the similarity to Good and God and Evil and Devil?)

Devil: 10.6 million
God: 61 million

God wins. (about 6 times more. Hmmm so God is in control still. Not surprising)

Round 5:

War vs Peace

Peace: 28.2 million
War: 92.5 million

War wins, this one is pretty clear cut as both words only really have one meaning. What can be said?

Extra rounds

Interestingly enough Brittany Spears got 5.5 million hits and Paris Hilton got 3.4 million hits. If you add them up they have almost half as many hits as evil itself.

So is all the world a good place? Afterall, look at the findings right? Life got a whopping 181 million hits. And Love got 124 million hits. Fair enough.

I thought sure, this is cool. Then I thought hmm I wonder. So I typed in porn and got 72 million hits. Wow that's 7 times more than when we used the word Devil. How very clever of him.

And finally I typed in sex and got 224 million hits. That's right sex got more hits than love and God have combined, more than good and evil, and almost as important as the sum of life and death. Are you surprised? Sadly perhaps not. So... what does that tell you?

Sleep

Has anyone ascertained the secret to sleeping. I personally can not go with less than 8 hours without feeling really drained in the morning. And after a certain time I start to shut down. Yet, I know of people who consistantly go to bed at 2 am - 5 am. What the heck? How can people survive perfectly fine with only 4 hours of sleep or less? Surely there must be some drawbacks. Tell me do you guys dream? Do you guys feel drained? Or are you just mad robots!

Some research showed that although no one actually figures out what the point of sleep is. As it's proven your body doesn't actually need it since can physically keep going without the need for 8 hours rests everyday. However, a study with rats they artificially would not let them rest, but fed them and what not... (yes I know it's cruel), the rats became nervous, paranoid, and started losing hair and eventually died. They have no idea why. Of course people are not rats so the side affects for them maybe different. What does sleep do for us? Why do we need it? How do you guys survive with so little? You crazy robots!

Comment

Firstly,
I'm surprised that everyone has become so defensive. Why does everyone all of a sudden think that it refers to them? (That's the real question) I did not expect such an interesting response. At any rate, I'll leave this topic alone as if you can stay on the bandwagon that's all that matters.

Secondly,
Justin is currently distributing grad CD's so get them from him ASAP before they run out... or he runs away. (I'll jerk post you!)

Bandwagon Fans

bandwagon

n 1: a popular trend that attracts growing support; "when they saw how things were going everybody jumped on the bandwagon"

Are you a bandwagon fan? Take all these people watching the leafs "claiming" to be fans. Sure you don't know who the GM is, what ranking the Leafs were in at the end of the season, or have watched even one regular season game. But hey everyone else is cheering for this team so I'm a fan now right? Wrong. That doesn't make you a leaf fan. What that makes you is a leecher. That's right a popularity leecher. Now that we got the terminology out of the way let's keep moving.

Actually not knowing this stuff is not necessarily a bad thing. Everyone was a noob (maybe even a leecher) at one time and this is how the sport grows. However, a true fan is one that is there for the good times and bad, one who stays on the bandwagon. A person who is loyal and doesn't stop believing when the team loses, not someone who hops on and off the bandwagon. Just don't pretend to be a fan unless you are a full one. I'm not saying wear a sign that reads "Noob, just watching for playoffs", but just know what you are!

I guess this is coming from the concept of,

Revelation 3:15,16

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

If you don't make a firm stand, on something like this how can you make one in more important things? Does your committment to things only change when it's convenient, when there's hype and popularity? How about in the normal regular season, do you not show any care then? You are either fully committed or you are not. Don't be on the bandwagon hopper.
Think about it.

Confidence vs Cockiness

Something that turns me off of people is cockiness. Now, sometimes it's not as clear as bragging how smart they are. Sometimes it's in the attitude they have in general. Body language is a big indication, they may be self indulgent, as in most of their stories make them look very good. It could be subtle things, such as being insensitive when they know they understand something and you don't. I just seem to have dislike for such people, they just really bug me. These are the people that make you want to beat them just to see how they take it. Of course, unfortunetly usually cocky people can back it up with atleast enough to beat you so that just makes you feel worse. Still they annoy me a lot and just make you feel crappy. The danger of cockiness is its not usually a conscience thing, but something people do naturally.

Be careful, although you may not be cocky in general there are some aspects of your life where you are cocky and need to be constantly vigilent. Let's be honest we're all cocky at something. Perhaps your cocky about not being cocky?

Now, a turn on (which I use in the sense of it being the opposite of turning me off and nothing more) are those that are humble. Contrary to belief humbleness does not mean constantly bashing yourself. You don't have to respond to people saying your smart by giving constant examples of dumb things you've done. Although it has the affect of making others perhaps feel better, it does more harm to you than good. Those that I admire for their humbleness are those that have something to be cocky about, but no one even knows about. Something that they don't hide, but don't flaunt, they don't defend it but act like it's no big deal. If you need help, they'll help you. If you feel bad, they'll encourage you. They don't bring their own achievements up on their own, and are supportive of you for you and not as a comparison of anything else.

Be careful, humbleness does not mean confidence bashing If your constantly bad mouthing yourself, not letting yourself feel good about your accomplishments and killing your own confidence your not taking humbleness in the right way. You have to have something to be proud of before you can be humble. Now, I don't know if you agree or not, but I think everyone should stride to be cocky so they can exhibit humbleness. A man who has nothing, can not display generousity.

Turnover

Well, the time is coming where the turnover begins. The new cycle. I gotta train a new coop student, get ready to go back to university and blah blah blah.
Weather is changing albeit sporadically and the atmosphere is changing around people with the hopes of summer vacation. What does this mean? It means that I have to readjust all over again. I'm telling you, I'm getting too old for this.

The number one answer from people I ask what they are doing in the summer is.

1. Whatever God leads me to do.
2. Find a job.
3. I don't know yet.

Hence, it seems no one seems to have a plan. That's okay, just lounge and have fun, nothing wrong with that everyone usually does that for atleast one summer. All will be good if the Leafs beat Ottawa. My predictions are Leafs vs Tampa in the east and Vancouver vs Detroit in the west with Leafs vs Detroit in the final. Also can't forget to wish Mike Weir good luck at defending his Masters in the next few days. Congrats to female hockey for winning worlds for the 8th straight time. muhahah this is the Canadian year.

Being Smart

Alright, I'm sure we've all felt incredibly stupid sometimes. However, have you ever had people go to you thinking your smart, because you did well at one single thing. They then think you're smart all the time? Or perhaps you meet people who really does do well and looks at you like you're dumb. The actual phrase being smart seems to be incredibly subjective. I think in general people think I'm not smart, afterall I go to Laurier right? (Which just shows how ignorant they are). However, in Laurier some people think I'm smart? (Which also shows how ignorant they are as well). So what do you consider smart?

Are smart people those that get 90's? Are smart people those that can work hard? Are smart people those that don't work hard and yet do better than you who study your head off for a month? Is smart someone who challenges themselves all the time and always comes out on top? Or is smart simply smarter than you are?

I suppose it's easy to call people smart, but what do we really mean? I'm sure it feels awkward to some for being known as the smart one even though they don't feel it themselves. (I felt terribly embarrassed for E.S during grad dinner when all the comments seemed geared to this ONE crime. Not saying I don't agree.) However, does this put too much emphasis on something that just segregrates the losers and winners in intelliect?

Personally I think a smart person is someone who understands everything easily, but takes the time to share that understanding with those that don't. Otherwise they are just jerks.

Very Random Thoughts

Final exam time has come. Where the diet decreases to junk food and sparadic time periods of whenever you feel hungry. Sleep usually starts late and goes on throughout morning. Also, a significant increase in the library from no time to all the time occurs. Add the stresses of actually writing the exam, and the calculator punching of figuring out what projected marks you can get. On the other hand I'm on coop so I'm not affected by this at all. hahaha.

On another note I actually remember exam time being fun... no classes, hang out with people all the time albeit studying.. doing random things, and celebrating together after milestones along the way. So feel lucky you guys!

I also realize that I'm incredibly high maintenance. Like I mean, this week alone I went to a foot doctor, and the optometrist. Which reminds me of the orthodondist appointment I'm supposed to make sometime. You add dentists, health doctors, barbers, and pastors. Are we really that messed up that you need someone to check all this stuff? Well I don't care that much, but it's just something to stop and ponder.

Hockey playoffs are starting soon? Any good hockey playoff pools going on out there? That sounds real interesting!

Yesterday went to another good bye Pastor Can and Mylene dinner at China buffet King. Cya later guys! Officially last time I'll see you guys in a while? Until Easter right? heh.
